The ERC funded project „ at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg invites applications to fill a 48-month PhD researcher position. The successful applicant has a background in Islamic Studies, anthropology, or a relevant philological or historical discipline. They will develop and conduct a research project that focusses on the modern history and present-day use of French Qur’an translations and that includes fieldwork in a French-speaking Muslim community. The PhD candidate will be part of a diverse team that studies Qur’an translations from different perspectives and in various languages and regions of the world. Applicants should be fluent in English and French and familiar with Qur’anic Arabic. Their MA (or equivalent) degree needs to be completed before the start of their work contract. The 48-month term ideally begins November 1, 2020 but the start date is negotiable. Residence in Freiburg for at least part of the project is expected. They will receive office space and have access to funds covering their research needs, including field work and participation in international conferences.
