Assessing the Study of Early Ibadi Sources: methodologies, developments and perspectives
Fourth Summer School – Details
In view of the successful three Summer Schools on Ibadism and Omani Studies in Volos, Greece (2017), on Procida Island (Naples), Italy (2018) and in Vancouver, Canada (2019), respectively, the Scientific Committee supervising the Summer School, its patron and sponsor agreed to continue and herewith invite to the
Fourth Summer School on Ibadism
scheduled for taking place in Tuebingen, Germany, in the period of 7th to 11th September 2020.
Since Tuebingen, most notably in the personality of Professor Josef van Ess, is closely related to the evolving academic Ibadi and Omani studies and their developments, the idea has been put forward to begin the next Summer School on Ibadism with a one-day workshop in honour of Professor Josef van Ess.
Under the title of
“Assessing the Study Of Early Ibadi Sources: methodologies, developments and perspectives”
the workshop is intended to pay tribute to the contribution which Professor van Ess made to research and study particularly on early Ibadi sources and the formation of Ibadi identity as expressed in early Ibadi theological and legal thinking. Ad personam invited colleagues and students of Professor van Ess will assess his rich respective oeuvre, a legacy that at the same time will serve as the source of inspiration for the subsequent Summer School.
Under the title of
“Cultural Encounters and Ibadi Theological Developments”
the Summer School will focus on text studies (early sources) bearing on the emergence and early development of Ibadi theological thinking within the culturally and religiously multifaceted context and spectrum of Early Islam.
As in the years passed. we invite applications from PhD and Senior MA students working on Ibadism and/or related matters that help to understand how certain theological concepts and ideas out of the great variety that made up context and spectrum of Early Islam, crystallized into a specifically Ibadi theology, what may have furthered this process, and who may have prompted it. Participating students are expected to present the fruits of their own pertinent research (25 to 30 minutes presentation, followed by 15 to 20 minutes discussion). Additional input will be given by ad personam invited keynote speakers who will serve also as respondents on the students’ presentations.
Applications for participation in the Summer School should contain:
- An outline of the intended presentation
- Applicant’s CV
- A motivational letter
and be submitted not later than 19 May 2020 to Pr. Angeliki Ziaka (angelica@ziakas.net) or to Pr. Ersilia Francesca (efrancesca@unior.it).
All submitted applications will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee supervising the Summer School.
