Position in Medieval History (University of Bayreuth, Germany)

The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive, interdisciplinary focus areas in research and teaching. The Faculty of Cultural Studies at the University of Bayreuth is looking to fill the role of Junior Professor (m/f) in Medieval History (salary rank: W1).

This is a fixed-term civil service position with a tenure track option.
The successful candidate will actively represent the subject area of medieval history in both research and teaching. He or she will specialize in non-European history – preferably history of the Middle East – and the global history of transregional processes (500-1400 AD). Involvement in the focus area “Cultural Encounters & Transcultural Processes” and an interest in the focus area “African Studies” are expected. Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary research is also required.

The postholder will be expected to contribute to all programmes of study in history, including the training of prospective history teachers.

In addition to the general administrative requirements, prerequisites for this position are a university degree, a doctoral degree, and proven excellence in teaching. If the candidate was employed as a graduate assistant or research associate prior to or subsequent to earning his or her doctorate, the total duration of the doctoral research phase and the employment phase must not exceed six years. A further prerequisite is the ability to teach in English.

The successful candidate will initially be hired for a period of three years and will be extended for an additional three years upon successful evaluation. In accordance with §4 para 1 number 3 of the Teaching Assignment Ordinance (Lehrverpflichtungsverordnung), the teaching load is currently set at 5 hours of instruction in the first phase and 7 hours of instruction in the second phase. Based on the outcome of the comprehensive evaluation to be carried out at end of the sixth year of employment, the candidate may be appointed university professor (salary rank: W2), employed as a tenured civil servant.

The University of Bayreuth strives to further increase the diversity of its academic staff. Scholars who can help make the research and teaching profile of the university more diverse – particularly female and international applicants – are therefore strongly encouraged to apply. All qualifications being equal, severely disabled applicants will be given priority. Applicants with children are highly welcome. The University of Bayreuth has been certified as a “family-friendly university” and offers “dual career support” for career-oriented partners of highly qualified employees. In addition, an extended audit conducted by the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) returned a favourable review for the University of Bayreuth’s commitment to internationalization.

Please send your cover letter and supporting documents (CV outlining your education and academic career, list of publications, list of courses taught, a description of your research, as well as copies of all diplomas and certificates) to the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Studies, Prof. Dr. Ludwig Haag, Universität Bayreuth, D-95440 Bayreuth, Germany.

Application deadline: 15.06.2015
