Post-doc in History : Humboldt University Berlin

Within the ERC Advanced Grant 2011 – FOUNDMED. Foundations in medieval societies. Cross-cultural comparisons – there is a position as a post-doctoral research fellow to be filled at the Department of History of the Humboldt University of Berlin as of May 1, 2015. The position is a fixed-term position limited to the project period ending May 31, 2017. The project focuses on comparative investigations of foundations in the medieval millenium. Under the leadership of the principal investigator five experts from the fields of Medieval, Byzantine, Jewish, Islamic and Indian studies are to collaborate on an “Encyclopedia of Foundations in the Medieval Millenium”.

Job description
Scientific services in research within the ERC Advanced Grants FOUNDMED (“Foundations in medieval societies. Cross-cultural comparisons”) – write articles for the field of Islamic Studies to be published in the intercultural and comparative encyclopedia of foundations in medieval societies within the broader framework of “Foundations and Society,” in close cooperation with other post-doctoral scholars from Byzantine Studies, Jewish Studies, Indology and Medieval Studies – fulfill tasks for his or her own academic research.

Requirements
An excellent doctoral degree in the field of Islamic or Middle Eastern Studies, Arabic, Iranian or Turkish Studies – excellent command of languages relevant to the historical sources and good command of English – at least reading knowledge of German; since the working language of the project is German, candidates with little or no oral proficiency in German will be expected to attend a language course (paid for by the project) in order to communicate effectively in the language – ability to work in an interdisciplinary research team with representatives from four other fields and to work in comparative perspective – desirable, but not required, is a good knowledge of the history of foundations – willingness to relocate to and work in Berlin.
