[Appel à contribution] International Conference of the Doctoral School in History – 19e édition – The Uses and Abuses of History and Academic Research Culture – 7-9 novembre 2024, Cluj (Roumanie) – DL : 15 septembre
The Doctoral School “History. Civilization. Culture”, of the Faculty of History and Philosophy of the Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj (Romania) has the pleasure of inviting you to attend the nineteenth edition of its annual international conference which brings together students in history and related fields. Initiated as a forum for debates, which, over the years, has attracted increasing attention from Romanian and international students, this conference offers young researchers an opportunity to reflect on their own doctoral subject and to compare their results with those of other early career and established scholars.
The general theme suggested by the organizers this year, the fate of academic research culture in the humanities may be of interest to scholars working on any topic within the field of history. Participants are invited to reflect on the state of the art in their own field of interest, considering the emergence and demise of trends, the crisis of the humanities, the impact of digital technologies, the vagaries of societal relevance, current politics and ideological pressures, educational policies, as well and the constraints of the ‘job market’.
While presenting their own research topics, participants are invited to consider the broader subject of current academic research cultures by focusing on the confrontation/accommodation/fusion between traditional historical scholarship and the appropriation by historians of theoretical frameworks provided by other disciplines, such as philosophy, cultural studies, gender studies, subaltern studies and colonial studies; the challenges of technology; the document fetish and the shadow of the Critical School; historical ‘turns’, linguistic, visual, spatial, material, ritual, emotional, interdisciplinarity and the stumbling block of method.
In this sense, we would like to propose a few topics of discussion that participants may wish to engage with during the conference:
- Quantity and quality in scholarly periodicals
- Peer reviewing in academic publishing
- The appropriation of paradigms and theoretical frameworks
- The use of historical arguments in political discourse
- The writing of national history
- The benefits and pitfalls of interdisciplinary approaches
- The definition and appropriation of concepts
- Heuristic tools in historical research
- The use of AI in historical research
The conference will take place on site in Cluj-Napoca except for some keynote lectures which may be held in hybrid format.
Practical details:
- The title of the presentation, together with the institutional affiliation, the name of the supervisor and an abstract of maximum 300 words in Romanian and English, for students from Romania, and in English for international students needs to be sent by Sptember 15th 2024 to maria_silvia.craciun[at]yahoo.com
- Participants will have 20 minutes for their presentations which will be followed by 10 minutes of discussion
- The organisers will reply to all applications by October 10th 2024
- Participants will receive the conference program by October 20th 2024
- Accomodation and meals are the responsibility of the organisers
We look forward to seeing you in Cluj!
