[Conférence] L’Occident islamique médiéval de Maribel Fierro (CCHS-CSIC) – 6, 7 et 9 février 2023 – MSH LSE

Le CIHAM-UMR 5648 aura l’honneur et le plaisir d’accueillir 4 interventions de la Pr. Maribel Fierro (CCHS-CSIC, Madrid), professeure invitée à l’EHESS, les 6, 7 et 9 février prochains. Maribel Fierro est une historienne et philologue arabisante, spécialiste mondialement reconnue de l’Occident islamique médiéval  (voir éléments biographique infra). Ses interventions se feront en anglais (questions en français, espagnol et anglais). L’accès est ouvert à toutes et à tous, dans la limite des places disponibles.

Lundi 6 février, 18h-19h30 : présentation de l’ouvrage ʽAbd al-Muʼmin. Mahdism and caliphate in the Islamic West (Onebook, 2021)

Abd al‑Mu’min (ca. 1094–1163) did not establish the first caliphate in the Islamic West, but his encompassed more territory than any that had preceded it. As leader of the Almohads, a politico-religious movement grounded in an uncompromising belief in the unity of God, he unified for the first time the whole of North Africa west of Egypt, and conquered much of southern Spain. Studying every facet of ‘Abd al-Mu’min’s rule, from his violent repression of opposition to the flourishing of scholarship during his reign, Maribel Fierro reveals an intelligent leader and a skilled military commander who sought to build a lasting caliphate across disparate and diverse societies.

 (MSH)Medina played a crucial role in the ways Muslims of the Islamic West constructed their religiosity and followed the law, as well as in the political legitimization of their rulers. This role will be explored through an innovative practice, the sending of letters to be read at the Prophet’s grave in Medina, the development of a ‘virtual’ visitation of this grave, and a curious tale of how two Iberian Christians attempted to destroy it.

When did Andalusi scholars start to produce local knowledge? How was it linked to the knowledge produced elsewhere? Which peculiarities singled it out? In my lecture, building on the online database Historia de los Autores y Transmisores de al-Andalus (HATA : https://www.eea.csic.es/red/hata/), I will offer an overview of the process of reception of Arabo-Islamic knowledge in al-Andalus and the emergence and formation of a literate milieu.

Al-Andalus is many things, among others a ‘combat-concept’ as recently described in Rachel Scott, AbdoolKarim Vakil and Julian Weiss (eds.), Al-Andalus in Motion: Travelling concepts and Cross-Cultural Contexts, and as such it is used to fight battles that can produce victims and that vary – sometimes considerably – according to where the audiences are located and their religious, ideological, political and national allegiances or interests.

Maribel Fierro is a Research Professor at the Institute for the Languages and Cultures of the Mediterranean – Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC). Her research focuses on the political and intellectual history of the pre-modern Islamic West (al-Andalus and North Africa) dealing among other topics with Islamic law, the construction of orthodoxy and the representation of violence in Arabic sources. Among her books ʽAbd al-Muʼmin. Mahdism and caliphate in the Islamic West (2021), ʽAbd al-Rahman III, the first Cordoban caliph (2005) and The Almohad revolution (2012). She has edited The Routledge Handbook on Muslim Iberia (2020) and Orthodoxy and heresy in Islam: Critical Concepts in Religious Studies (2013). She has edited The Routledge Handbook on Muslim Iberia (2020), and  the Western Islamic world, eleventh-eighteenth centuries, vol. II of The New Cambridge History of Islam (2010). She has held visiting positions at Hamburg University, Leiden University, Exeter University, EHESS (Paris). Her work has been supported by Spanish Ministry of Education, the European Research Council and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
